Inspired by their love of clean, Scandinavian d?cor, a young design-conscious couple has transformed a scruffy period house into an elegant, easy-on-the-eye home that simply oozes style and creativity.

When a Dublin couple took a pop on a damp old house in Glenageary it was divided up into three flats and was painted in violent shades of bright green. Yet it retained a rare dignity and the owners spotted real potential as a stylish family home. They put on a new roof, installed new sash windows and decided they needed to open up the house. However, their main objective was to create a light and airy kitchen that would be the heart and soul of the home.

They called on designer Maria McVeigh as they loved her clean, precise and elegant creations. ?Maria came up with an amazing idea for the work,? the owner says. ?We couldn’t have done it without her.?

Maria decided to open up the two living rooms with as wide an opening as possible and to lengthen the rear casement window to the ground. ?Now you can step through a ?link? – which is fully glazed and offers views to the garden and light to the kitchen – into the playroom,? Maria explains.

With a new, gorgeous blank canvas to work from the couple added warmth and personality by googling obsessively in search of Scandinavian design, mostly mid-century modern. So today Arne Jacobsen designs sit side by side with Ikea bargains and collected objects from their travels. ?There’s a bit of global chaos thrown in,? the owner laughs.

Today it’s a beautiful and restful space with a rare balance of elegant proportions, original features and a modern, but sympathetic interior design.

We’d happily move in ?.
