How To Get The Best Out Of Your Second Day Hair

Our tips to ensure your second day hair stays looking as fresh as possible

For those of us that have to undertake an almost three-hour daily commute, having shiny hair daily just doesn’t top the priority list. And asides from having zero time to spare, excessively washing your locks isn’t a good idea; you’re stripping it of natural oils and potentially drying out your scalp, so experts recommend scrubbing according to your hair type. If you’ve very fine hair or hit the gym every day then yes, you may need to wash it each day but for those with normal to dry or curly hair, every other day is the norm.

This means there’s a whole lot of us walking around with second day hair, which needs its own care. By the second day, hair is less voluminous and contains more oil, so it’s a good idea to opt for a hairstyle that hides any greasiness and gives your hair more body. Using a doughnut is both practical and looks tres chic but not before using a spritz of dry shampoo on your mane. The argument is out in terms of the best on the market, but I have it narrowed down to two that have never fail me.

The Toni & Guy Casual Matt Texture Dry Shampoo (6.99), with it’s citrusy, fresh-smelling’sent leaves hair looking and smelling gorgeous and is one of the few that doesn’t leave a residue. And just because it’s not always practical to use a spray, the Bumble & Bumble Pret a Powder (30) is perfect for touch ups when you don’t want to douse your entire head with a dry shampoo – just work the powder into your roots or the preferred section of hair, brush and you’re good to go.

Tips to keep second day hair fresh:

1. Comb the hair from root to tip to distribute the natural oils from the scalp to the hair strands. Then, tease the roots to create volume while keeping the ends tamed.

2. For curly hair, mist in some water or a leave-in conditioner, then scrunch to revitalise the curls

3. Spray the roots with a dry shampoo and pull the hair back and lightly spray your roots with the dry shampoo
