The A To Z Of Skincare – Part I

In the first of a three-part beauty series,?MELANIE MORRIS has all you need to know about skin, and how to make it magnificent.

ANTIOXIDANTS

These key vitamins and minerals (including vitamins A, C and E, plus copper, zinc and selenium) help neutralise the effects of free radicals on our skin, which in turn slows ageing and repairs damage. Powerful ingredients in skincare to help protect us against the hazards of modern living.

BLACKHEADS

No matter how tempting it might be, do not squeeze them – you could well end up with facial scars from forcing the critters out. Instead, be sure to?book a facial that includes professional extraction, where the therapist can’steam pores open to gently get at the grime, and remove blackheads without consequences. Bored? Leave your own face alone and watch Dr Pimple Popper on YouTube instead. Far more gross and satisfying.

CONTOUR

The face-shaping trend that’s not going away. To get it right, brush a 3-shape from forehead to temple, and then around under the cheekbone into the hollow of the face. And then sweep just under the jawline for added depth. Highlight works inaCfrom the side of the top brow bone, to above the cheekbone. And don’t forget to blend.

DARK CIRCLES

Possibly one of the biggest skincare concerns, dark circles under the eyes is where pools of blood stagnate. Revitalise the area and get the?circulation moving with gentle massage, or select eye products that are applied via metal rollerballs or tools that can be kept in the fridge.

EPIDERMIS

FAKING IT

False lashes, hair extensions, gel nails and/ or semi-permanent make-up – Shop around before committing. Get referrals, find examples of the professional’s handiwork, and ask what condition it left one’s natural assets. Then keep up your end of the deal and be sure to follow all aftercare advice. Tread carefully for happiest, most beautiful results.

GLYCOLIC ACID

Glycolic acid is part of the group of active compounds known as AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids). Derived from cane sugar, it has small molecules, so is able to penetrate the’skin deeply and easily, making it the most effective for treating fine lines, acne, blackheads, dullness and oiliness. Glycolic cleansers are effective exfoliants, clearing the epidermis of dead, old cells.
