6 Movies We Want To See In 2014

We round up the movies that we want to see on the big screen this year.

Yves Saint Laurent

Rising star Patrick Niney depicts the Algerian born artist Yves Saint Laurent, who was appointed as creative director of Dior at the tender age of 21. Covering his meteoric rise, brief fall from grace, his military conscription, eventual return to favour and his lifelong relationship with former business and life partner, Pierre Bergé. Yves Saint Laurent hits French screens in early 2014.

The Only Lovers Left Alive

Starring Tumblr’s husband Tom Hiddleston as a very indie musician who lives in the wasteland of Detroit and depressed with humanity. His lover, played by Tilda Swinton, senses his discontent and returns from Tangiers to wait out eternity with him. Then Tilda’s sister, Mia Wasikowska, decides to crash and things go a little bit crazy. The fact that everyone is also a vampire lends this domestic drama even more edge. Hits screens February 21st.

Belle

Injecting a bit of realism into the bonnets and breeches genre, Belle tells the fascinating and true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the mixed–race daughter of a British Naval officer and an African woman. Taken to England by her father, Dido raised by his uncle, the Lord Chief Justice, as an aristocratic lady alongside her cousin. Belle explores the complex social hierarchies of the time as well as depicting a love story between Dido and a young lawyer who her family sees as being beneath her yet popular opinion at the time sees as too good for her.

Winter’s Tale

Lady Sybil lives! Our nation’s son Colin Farrell is back where he belongs as the romantic lead in this love across the time-space-continuum supernatural drama.  Russell Crowe also stars as the dastardly villain and attempts an Irish accent. Expected in cinemas this Spring.

Interstellar

After the phenomenally successful and acclaimed Dark Knight Trilogy, Christopher Nolan returns to the big screen with Interstellar. With Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Matthew McConaughy starring it promises to be a science fiction epic about a team of scientists trying to find a way for humanity to survive. The release date is pencilled in for November.

12 Years A Slave

Critics and stateside audiences are in universal agreement that this movie is one of the most powerful cinematic experiences in recent memory. Telling the true story of a free black man in pre-civil war New York, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is abducted and sold into slavery. This movie tells of his struggle to live under the ownership of a sadistic Michael Fassbender while retaining his dignity and hope for a better existence.
