These may not be popcorn movies, but if you want to see the best of the Irish and foreign cinema’s latest offerings, these are the places where you’ll want to go. So get in your car, get your film buffs friends together, and enjoy these film festivals in Ireland …

Clones Film Festival | 23–26 October | Clones, Co. Monaghan  Aiming for a target audience as diverse as the films to be shown, the festival has an educational slant with special workshops and screenings for primary schools and master classes for film students. Among the best films on an impressive programme are: Within the Eye of the Storm and The Lunchbox. You can be more than a spectator at this one. The Short Film Challenge will see teams of film-makers write and produce their own short, involving audience members in casting, location and other supportive roles.

Why Not? Adventure Film Festival | Galway, 25 & Castlebar 30 October  The festival has one aim: “to inspire people with tales of adventure”. And inspired you shall be: amazing cinematography of mind-blowing extreme sports or incredible expeditions in remote places of the planet is on offer. Here’s a little sample: Oceanic Acid.

Waterford Film Festival | 7–9 November  Now in its 8th year, the festival screens and promotes short films from around the world. This year, it will show a great blend of dramas, comedies, animation, thrillers and documentaries, all screened at the Garter Lane Arts Centre.

Subtitle – European Film Festival | 24–30 November | Kilkenny  Yes – there will be subtitles. Catch some of the most popular European films of the year at various venues in Kilkenny City. On offer this year: “inky black comedies, powerful dramas, super smart thrillers, rapturous musicals, terrifying horrors“.

Cork Film Festival | 8–16 November  Ireland’s oldest film festival will screen its eclectic choice of films in atmospheric locations such as the Cork Opera House, the Triskel Christchurch and the Gate Multiplex. Its log line is “Films. Music. Ideas” – alongside cinematic gems from all over the world, the festival has an exciting music on film programme, and events, such as Blood Rising, exploring contemporary hot political issues.

We look forward to:
