Girls wanna have fun. Well, they want to have fun and more money, or at least, the same money as the boys, thanks very much.
Cyndi Lauper, eighties icon slash singer of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (in case you didn’t know), tweaked the powerhouse anthem to refer to the gender pay gap while appearing on The Late, Late Show with James Corden, and it is all sorts of brilliant.
She has epically tweaked the lyrics to reflect the gender disparity problem around the word, and if we’re honest, we prefer it to the original.
Example: “I come home in the morning light / My mother says, ‘Why don’t you make the same as a guy?’/ Oh, Mama dear, we’re not the fortunate ones / ‘Cause girls, they want equal funds.”
The star also refers to women in films having to run in high heels, and we’ll be pinning her epic dating advice to our fridges forevermore: “Boys be ready to pay, we’ll get the cheque when we make the same.” Damn straight.
The tune is predominantly feminist in tone, but the singer explained that this was always the intention. “It doesn’t mean that girls just want to f**k. It just means that girls want to have the same damn experience that any man could have,” she said previously.
We heart you, Cyndi Lauper.
