It’s news to no one that Hollywood actresses are subject to a baffling amount of judgmental BS from the media. Melissa McCarthy is the latest star to call shame on this practice of only valuing women on the basis of their looks. During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres last week, the comedy actress spoke about how one male journalist queried McCarthy’s decision to look less than a million dollars in the movie Tammy.
The writer said to McCarthy she was only a good actress when she looked attractive, as opposed to the pared back look she was working for the character of Tammy. McCarthy responded in heroic fashion, telling the journalist “Just know every time you write stuff, every young girl in this country reads that and they just get a little bit chipped away.”
The Bridesmaids actress told Ellen that the reason she felt she had to speak up: “I just think we tear down women in this country for all these superficial reasons and women are so great and strong.”
Fair play to Melissa for taking such an empowering stand.
