The film industry and stateside theatre circles were in shock yesterday after celebrated actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York apartment of an apparent heroin overdose. Hoffman had publicly spoken about his trouble with addiction in the past, especially during the early days of his career.

Considered one of the most capable actors of his generation Hoffman had a penchant for nabbing some of the most intelligent roles in modern cinema, delivering memorable turns in Magnolia, Boogie Nights, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Master, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Doubt. He attended the recent Sundance Festival to promote his appearance in the upcoming espionage thriller A Most Wanted Man and had just finished up the substantial majority of his role in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.?

He leaves behind three children and his ex-partner, Mimi O’Connell, from whom he split late last year. Hoffman won an Oscar for his versatile turn in 2005’s critically acclaimed Capote.
