Kevin Arundal’s lively gastropub-cum-steakhouse The Chop House on the corner of Shelbourne Road and Bath Avenue is bursting with atmosphere and ambience – the décor is simple with pastel coloured tongue and groove panelling and soft candle-light setting the tone. While the conservatory at the side offers great street views over this newly fashionable little Dublin 4 gastro-hood (with the ever-jammed Slatterys pub, Junior’s and Paulie’s restaurants just across the road). Daily specials are chalked up on the board, offering the very best fresh Irish fish and killer steak. Beef-lovers will be in heaven as waiters present you with a big chopping board showing off the raw cuts of meat and explaining the cut, the taste, how long it has been aged, where the beef has been sourced and more. We went for the Dundalk fillet and the dry-aged Hereford 10oz ribeye, which came with sides of fried onions, mushrooms and homemade hand-cut chips; and both were melt-in-the-mouth tender and delicious. Hats off to head chef Denis Massey.
Small Plates While the beef stars here – the imaginative starters are also worth more than a mention. For a light bite the warm salad of new season French asparagus is heavenly while the tortellini of butternut squash, nut butter, capers, Trumpet de Mourn and crispy sage will leave you hankering for more.
What to drink The bonus of this being a pub is that you have a full bar and pints on draft to add to the well-balanced wine list which favours France but offers appealing Italian and Spanish bottles too priced between €24 to €49.
