If you’ve ever dreamed of lustrous career in Hollywood, working movie to movie and mingling with the stars, let us tell you, it’s really not as glamorous and marvellous as you may think. Thanks to some hackers who got their mitts on some private email exchanges between producer Scott Rudin (The Truman Show, No Country For Old Men) and the top dogs at Sony (co-chairperson Amy Pascal to be exact), Angelina Jolie has been chewed up, spat out and labelled a talentless diva. Nice.
Long story short, Sony were to make a Steve Jobs biopic, but after lots of jumping through hoops and surviving other obstacle courses, it wound up moving over to Universal just as it was almost ready to go. Naturally, Scott Rudin who was supposed to produce the potential Sony award-bait is more than a little pissed off, but there’s just no excuse for this level of backstabbery and bitchiness.
The reason Angelina gets torn to shreds is because she was to star in a Cleopatra movie, and she wanted David Fincher to direct her in that. Thus, he wouldn’t be free to direct the Sony Steve Jobs pic, which is what Rudin wanted, which is why (we think) the entire thing fell to pieces.
Here, Rudin goes through Pascal for a shortcut for keeping Fincher away from Jobs, dragging Angelina along for the ride too.
“YOU BETTER SHUT ANGIE DOWN BEFORE SHE MAKES IT VERY HARD FOR DAVID TO DO JOBS.”
“There is no movie to be made (and how that is a bad thing given the insanity and rampaging spoiled ego of this woman and the cost of the movie is beyond me) and if you won’t tell her that you do not like the script…”
“I’m not destroying my career over a minimally talented spoiled brat who thought nothing of shoving this off her plate for eighteen months so she could go direct a movie. I have no desire to be making a movie with her, or anybody, that she runs and that we don’t. She’s a camp event and a celebrity and that’s all and the last thing anybody needs is to make a giant bomb with her that any fool could see coming. We will end up being the laughing stock of our industry and we will deserve it, which is so clearly where this is headed that I cannot believe we are still wasting our time with it…”
“I’m also happy to say all of this to Angie directly as I have no need to keep her happy and what I DO have is the right to determine for myself a) what I want to do with my own time and work, and b) what I want to do with material I incepted…”
Yep, that’s how it rolls in Tinsel Town. You can read the full exchange of leaked emails, along with all the drama, over on Gawker.
