WICKLOW Sense & Sensibility
This Sunday, dust off that bonnet and brush down that rather fetching Empire line frock – Jane Austen’s gambol through the Regency era will romp across Wicklow’s Powerscourt’s Walled Garden forthwith. “If a book is well written, I always find it too short,” quipped the author, which is one of many reasons why we still can’t get enough of Austen’s writing, 199 years after her death. Bring a picnic – and a brolly? – to this al fresco Chapterhouse Theatre Company adaptation charting the trials and tribulations of the chalk’n’cheese Dashwood sisters as their family’s fortunes fall. Starts 2.30-4.30pm; tickets cost €16.50 and include entry into the Powerscourt Gardens.
June 26, Powerscourt House, Enniskerry, Co Wicklow; www.powerscourt.com/events
DUBLIN Madonna: The Immaculate Collection Sing Along
Beauty’s where you find it… And on Sunday it will be in the zealous, unified vocal chords of the capital’s Madonna’s fans, who’ll be kicking up a karaoke storm at this Sing Along Social. If you missed MC with the mostess, Aoife McElwain, at Body & Soul last weekend this is your moment: Grab the air mic and croon along until to Madge’s greatest hits compilation released in 1990. Open Your Heart, Vogue, Get into the Groove, Papa Don’t Preach… all that’s left is the conundrum of what on Earth to wear: Boy Toy, Italians do it better or Orgy Ciccone?
June 26, MVP Pub, 29 Upper Clanbrassil Street D8; Tickets here.
GALWAY The Dirty Circus
Speaking of wardrobe dilemmas, what to don for The Dirty Circus at Galway’s Roisin Dubh? The dress code for tomorrow’s show is ‘Ladies and Gents’ but given burlesque’s gender-bending heritage, it’s unlikely anyone will bat a false eyelash if a gal turned up in a tux and a chap rocked a cocktail dress. In fact, imaginations are expected to run riot on a night when being best-dressed wins prizes. Performers at this tongue-in-cheek soiree include class act Bella A Go Go, pole star Foxy P, Alternative Miss Ireland’s Smilin’ Kanker and singing stalwart Kristin Kapelli. Doors 9pm, tickets €15.
June 24, Roisin Dubh, Lower Dominick Street, Galway; Tickets here.
