Can Walking Gear Look Cool?

f8198_wu6357_m

This is the BEST time of the year to go for long walks, and it’s my favourite thing to do at the weekends – the wind is light, the rain is infrequent and the leaves are beautiful, underfoot or overhead. Not that it’s my main focus, but I’d rather go walking in nice-looking gear than not. I always remember as a child having to wear black Wellington boots when it rained, but desperately wanting a pair in bright red or blue, or maybe even yellow.

Although I’m over my primary colour obsession, I still enjoy introducing a pop of the unexpected to what can be a hum-drum looking attire if you let it.

This wool parka looks so cosy, and has an A-line shape so is perfect for wearing over chunky knits. The faux-fur trim is removable and it also has a handy hood. I love this colour red in winter. It’s so warming, and brings our pasty Irish complexions to life!

There’s nothing as cosy as sheepskin in winter (my dog sleeps on a sheepskin rug and I look on with envy!). This cool burgundy scarf has a stylish buckle detail, which also serves to keep the piece nice and secure around your neck, and although pricey will last you forever.

I recently came across these Irish-made backpacks from Sligo-based The Atlantic Equipment Project, and I adore them. Made from waxed cotton which has been quilted to add shape to the bag, the clever rolltop design allows you to adjust the volume you carry as and when required.

I have these boots in a dusty blue (I like something other than traditional camel or tan) and they’re so comfy and cosy on winter walks. Although chunky, they’re nice and lightweight, too, so perfect for wearing on long walks.
