Why I’m Crushing On Velvet

Why I’m Crushing On Velvet

I’ve been looking at the AW16 collections since March so the popularity of velvet right now hasn’t come as a surprise. Last spring I thought perhaps I’d dip my toe in the trend with a pair of boots or a sweater, something subtle that wouldn’t scream “upholstery”, which of course is the big fear when wearing this tactile fabric. By August, a couple of street style stars and a few more chic celebrities, who were pulling off the trend with aplomb, had me convinced that I could risk something more daring such as a skirt or a dress perhaps.

Tilda Swinton and Brie Larson

Now as we head towards November and the build-up to Christmas, I’m convinced that a full-on velvet trouser suit is the only way to go. Let’s say, I’ve been wholly converted.?What an utterly luxurious thing to own. Ever the pragmatist, however, what appeals to me too is the fact that a trouser suit offers two separates that can be worn independently and in a completely different fashion, so several outfits for the price of one. A textured?jacket over jeans or leather trousers will soften their utilitarian feel (see Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, above), while velvet trousers will add modernity and personality to a simple white shirt. Dark colours are of course an easier way to ease into the trend, although I think black can often obscure the texture completely. Opt for navy instead, or if you’re feeling brave burgundy and forest green (see Tilda Swinton, above) are key shades this season. A silver or gold metallic looks so luxurious and chic, but can be unforgiving, so make sure the fit is right for your shape. Whether you want to nod to this trend, or embrace it wholeheartedly, here are’some of the most gorgeous textured?pieces?around now.
