As the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, Lily Rose Depp is genetically blessed, certainly, (almond-shaped eyes, a peachy complexion, exquisite cheekbones and cute dimples), but the 17-year-old beauty is proving to be a formidable fashion player both on and off the red carpet, too. What’s so engaging about Depp is that she keeps her look fresh and youthful, and with a really strong fashion edge. She never veers towards parody, avoiding those predictable princess gowns for red carpet appearances that make her peers look twice their age. Instead, she opts for midi-length skirts and dresses, cropped tops (if you can’t wear them when you’re 17, when can you?), sheer fabrics and neat silhouettes that showcase her beautiful figure but never overwhelm her petite frame. Like every other teenager, she experiments, too, with everything from chokers to bandeaus, cropped tops to socks with sandals. And she pulls off each look because she possesses that one attribute essential to great style. That’s neither money, fame or celebrity parents. It’s confidence. Her appearance at Cannes this year in a pair of Chanel shorts and matching hooded sweatshirt with coral heels showcased this inherent sense of style perfectly.
At this year’s Met Gala, Depp stole the show, again in Chanel, wearing a stunning striped halter-neck gown and bolero draped chicly off her shoulders. Coupled with smoky eyes and unfussy hair, she was the epitome of modern sophistication. But the ankle length and fitted silhouette kept the look age appropriate.
For Sundance, Depp embraced laid-back chic and showed she can wear colour with as much ease as denim or monochrome. The vibrant green trousers paired with lace-up boots hit just the right balance.
Depp has already been snapped up as the face of Chanel eyewear. Given her natural beauty, inherent sense of style and ability in front of the camera, would it be too ironic to suggest she could be the next Kate Moss?!
