5 Interior Design Project Tips From Jane Higgins

By IMAGE Interiors & Living
10th Nov 2016

Having worked on a wealth of different projects over the years, Jane Higgins knows that while trends fade, good design remains.

“The end result can depend on a lot of different factors, but it really comes down to the people that will inhabit the living space,” she says. “I try not to impose my own personal taste too much, and instead go with?a collaborative approach.”

Here, she talks us through five projects that her team?brought to life with tips you can gain from each of them.

1. Entrance areas in this Smithfield home lend themselves to bespoke storage and display units.?In this spacious penthouse loft apartment, we designed a luxurious bench seating and storage unit in lacquered and painted oak.

Meanwhile in the living room, we created texture with wallpaper and bespoke shelving with integrated lighting to highlight the featured artwork by Lola Donoghue. Sheer fabrics on the window diffuse the natural light, while accessories throughout create a feeling of cosiness.

2. Below, a?North County Dublin coastal period home benefits from a strong colour scheme.?In a large scale refurbishment and extension to an Edwardian house, we designed an in-frame hand-painted kitchen with chrome detailing and brought in some of the natural tones of the seaside location in the feature colour of the island.

On the opposite side of the kitchen we built in units to match the kitchen with display and storage space, offset with a natural brick wall. A well-curated fireside treatment can really create harmony in this space.

3. A restrained palette of colours and finishes create a warm family kitchen in this Glasnevin home. Here?we combined lacquered kitchen units with feature brass ?wafer? handles. All this was offset with floating oak shelves, marble wall tiles, sile stone counters and feature cement floor tiles.

4. Darker colours with accents of brass and antique mirror look immediately luxurious in this Sandycove space.?The power of colour is evident in this very sleek unit and I love the effect that deep rich colour can have in a space.

5. Recessed lighting sets off brickwork to perfection.?Lighting is always one element of a project that can create seriously super effects. Integrated LED lighting creates a picture window in a Rathfarnham home and reflects off the sile stone counter.
