1. You can’t stop thinking about change. All day every day, on the way to work, on the way home from work, at work, when you talk to others, when others are talking to you, the only thing you can think about is change. You go to bed at night thinking about change, you dream about career change and you wake up thinking about making a career change. You are signed up to every job website out there, you spend all of your free time in work looking up new courses to try and make the change but you just can’t seem to do it.

2. Your perception of time is altered. At work time feels like it passes slowly, minutes feel like hours and the last two hours of the day feel like they drip painfully slowly past you. BUT on your lunch break, at home in the evenings, at the weekend, when you are doing something you love an amazing thing happens and time begins to pass really really quickly. When you are happy and content doing things you enjoy and with people you enjoy being around time vanishes, it passes really fast and suddenly it is lunchtime on Sunday and you can’t stop thinking about how much you hate work.

3. You feel stuck in a rut know you need change but just don’t know how to do it. You are not alone, so many people feel like this that there is a specific term for it in career psychology – career paralysis. You know what you need to do, you want to do it but you are held back by the innate human form of protection fear of change and fear of the unknown. In essence you are paralysed and locked into your career.

4. You feel a loss of purpose and passion. You have a relationship with your career and just the same as any other relationship when the passion is gone it gets old and boring. You are no longer turned on by your career and you have lost interest. You have grown tired of the material things in your career that at one stage excited you, now you are going through the motions to get your pay check. Okay so your salary is naturally a factor but it should not be the determining factor in staying in your current career. Change is Possible. You just need to know how to make the change.

5. Unhappiness in your Career is affecting other parts of your life. Such is the extent of your discontent with your current career your mental wealth reserves have been depleted. Your concentration is suffering, you feel low in yourself, your self-esteem and belief in your ability has crashed. You feel crap not just at work but at home, with your friends and at time when you know you should be enjoying yourself.

If you are sure that you want to make change do so slowly, in a manner that you are comfortable with, speak to somebody you trust and make the changes with the help of a professional who can guide you through the process successfully.
