If your brain is feeling foggy throughout the day and you are struggling with your energy, memory, staying focused or fueling your body, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic has detailed some brain foods that could help you out.
“Usually, nutrition doesn’t immediately change the way our brains work,” Jessica Crandall, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic explained to Refinery29. However, she says that there are certain foods that might be particularly poised to help your brain – but stressed the importance of a balanced lifestyle, with enough sleep and exercise.
“Carbohydrates are a good fuel source for our brains,” she said. “So if we’re looking to make sure we’re getting enough energy, that could be a really helpful way for our brains to be fueled correctly. Sometimes, when people go on extreme diets and they go on a low-carb diet, that can really impact their brain function. You have to make sure you’re getting the right kind of fuel.”
SALMON
Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids to give your brain a healthy dose of fuel.
OATS
“Oats have good magnesium levels in them and that can actually help with good [brain] function,” Crandall recommends.
CHIA SEEDS
Chia seeds are full of?omega-3 fatty acids that Crandall says can help fuel your brain and fibre to help digestion.
MACKEREL
“They’re high in omega-3 content, which is really good for decreasing inflammation and fueling our bodies appropriately,” she says.
AVOCADO
Crandall says that avocado is a great source of the healthy monounsaturated fats that are so key to brain function.
SPINACH
Spinach and other leafy green vegetables help blood flow to the brain.
WATER
Okay, it’s not a food, but Crandall says, “Good hydration definitely can make you feel more clear-headed.” Also sometimes, if you’re dehydrated, your body can mix the signals with hunger. It’s quite common to feel hunger?and confuse it for thirst.
