Watch: Rubberbandits’ Blindboy Boatclub Sheds Light On Mental Health In Ireland

The Rubberbandits are an interesting duo; they write ridiculously catchy songs about horses and they wear plastic bags over their heads but through their acerbic satire, they’re also known for making very relevant comments about the issues of the world, from politics to mental health and the state of contemporary Ireland. Sometimes, the best way to make sense of things is through the medium of comedy, particularly satire, and more and more, whenever these Limerick natives have something to say, we listen up; there’s always something substantial behind the punchline. One part of the duo, Blindboy Boatclub is currently making waves across the web for his insightful take on the importance of mental health. He’s bemused at the thought of being considered ‘the voice of reason’, he says he ‘shouldn’t be’, but he is. In a Channel 4 video for the 1916 centenary, Blindboy says: “My generation, we’re old enough to remember the Celtic Tiger, but we’re massively affected by the recession. Our 20s were stolen from us, pretty much. Young Irish people, the suicide amongst them is massive. Huge amounts of suicide, jumping into rivers, and emigration and a lot of young Irish people, they don’t see a future.”
