Winona Ryder Cast In New Netflix Drama

Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder’s career may be one of those things you associate primarily with the nineties, like brown lip liner and slip dresses. But, like the nineties, Winona is back. Yes, Jo March is making her career comeback courtesy of entertainment giants Netflix.

The actress will take the female lead in a supernatural thriller, which was titled Montauk during initial production talks, a fact sure to send a shiver down many a J1 survivor’s spine. The show’s first series is slated for eight episodes and will tell the story of a young boy’s disappearance in the 1980s. Winona plays this boy’s mother, Joyce, and will find herself at the centre of a mystery involving secret branches of government, scientific experiments and the supernatural.

While that all sounds very scary, we’re delighted to see Winona get the gig. The 1980s setting will hark back to the heyday that made her Hollywood’s grunge sweetheart and playing spooky is one of her innate talents. Remember Edward Scissorhands? TVline even reports? Netflix, who are making the show, are pitching the entire endeavour as ?a love letter to the 80s classics that captivated a generation?.

Winona Ryder was one of the biggest actresses of the 1990s, with her roles in movies such as Heathers, Little Women, Beetlejuice and Mermaids held up as iconic performances. She was on track to being considered one of the modern greats when personal issues and high-profile shoplifting charges drew attention away from her career. Despite acclaimed performances in movies such as Girl, Interrupted leading roles waned. There’s also that rumour involving the breakdown of her friendship with Gwyneth Paltrow – Winona has allegedly claimed the GOOP founder stole the script of Shakespeare in Love from her and auditioned for the Oscar-winning role as a result. Gwyneth has rubbished this rumour, but Winona is Jo March, so there is that.

Netflix have slated Winona’s show, because that’s why we’re calling it, for a 2016 release.
