Hoping to avoid UK fees and extended delivery times, it looks like Amazon had found a new home in Ireland.

Feeling the pinch since the start of Brexit? With additional charges on items ordered from the UK and a significant delay in delivery times, it can feel a little like the world is moving backwards during this pandemic.

But the delivery chaos as lit a few fires amongst retail giants and it looks like Amazon might be first off the mark with the launch of a new distribution centre in Baldonnell. The company had been looking for a premises since early last year after the UK’s exit from the EU seemed imminent, but it took a glimpse of the realities of a post-Brexit world to convince them to take the leap.

Amazon has yet to officially confirm the news but according to the Irish Times the online retailer is about to take a 60,000-square-metre warehouse in Mountpark logistics centre in Baldonnell, where Amazon product will be stored, packed and posted. Currently, all Irish Amazon orders are delivered from the UK distribution hub.

This will likely also mean faster delivery times for Amazon Prime customers. A Prime hub was set up in Rathcoole last year so many have already seen speedier delivery times. But the significant warehouse space in the new centre will mean more items will be available for Prime delivery.

While there has been a big push in Ireland to shop as locally as you can through this pandemic, it seems that Amazon believes it has a part to play in Ireland, even if it’s deliveries of toilet roll after all the shops have run out.
