A 36-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Longford native Sarah McNally in New York. Marcin Pieciak, with an address in Queens, was arrainged yesterday on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon for the fatal stabbing of Ms McNally, his 41-year-old girlfriend. Ms McNally, originally from Longford, was working as a bartender at a Maspeth tavern when Pieciak allegedly stabbed her and then injured himself.
Trump loses bid to delay hush money trial
A New York judge has denied Donald Trump’s bid to delay his April 15 trial on charges stemming from hush money paid to a porn star until the U.S. Supreme Court reviews claims of presidential immunity in a separate criminal case. The court is scheduled to hear the former U.S. President’s arguments that he is immune from federal prosecution for trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Democratic President Joe Biden on April 25.
Woman died of blood clots days after doctor discharged her with panic attack symptoms
A verdict of medical misadventure has been recorded into the death of a 27-year-old Dublin woman who collapsed at home with a pulmonary embolism three days after she was discharged from a hospital where she was diagnosed as only suffering from a panic attack. Explaining her verdict, coroner Clare Keane said the hospital’s protocol of carrying out a certain type of blood test on patients suspected of possibly having a pulmonary embolism had not been followed in Ms Doyle’s case.
Gardaí investigating claims former Defence Forces members training troops in Libya
Claims former Irish Defence Forces personnel have been training troops loyal to a Libyan army commander are being investigated. The Defence Forces confirmed have now called in gardaí to examine claims that the former serving personnel engaged in weapons training in Irish army fatigues contrary to an ongoing UN arms and arms-related embargo in Libya. The claims appeared in an Irish Times article which reported former members of the elite Army Ranger Wing are alleged to have been training troops loyal to Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar.
Harris to meet more Independents
Fine Gael leader Simon Harris is due to hold discussions with two Independent TDs later today, in a bid to secure their support in next week’s Dáil vote for Taoiseach. The Government has a slender majority in the Dáil, and therefore has the required support to elect Mr Harris as Taoiseach on Tuesday. However, more support is always welcome when difficult decisions lie ahead. So far, Mr Harris has received the backing of five deputies who are outside the Coalition parties.
