Israel announces ‘temporary’ aid routes

Israel has announced that it would allow “temporary” aid deliveries into famine-threatened northern Gaza, hours after the United States warned of a sharp shift in its policy over the Gaza war. Joe Biden told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that US policy on Israel was dependent on the protection of civilians and aid workers in Gaza, the first hint of possible conditions to Washington’s military support. Hours later, in the middle of the night in Jerusalem, Israel announced it would open more aid routes into blockaded Gaza.

Cork fire

A man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s have died in a house fire in Cork city. Gardaí and fire services were alerted to the fire on Lower Glanmire Road in Mayfield at around 11.15pm last night. The fire was brought under control by fire services. The Cork City Coroner has been informed, and the results of the post-mortems, along with a technical examination of the scene, will guide the ongoing Garda investigation.

Supermac’s April Fool’s

Social media accounts attached to Supermac’s have been suspended after the fast food company posted an April Fool’s Day joke. The Galway-based company posted a photoshopped image of Croke Park on March 31, teasing that it had been renamed as “Supermac’s Croke Park”. A spokesperson for Supermac’s said the post in question was meant as an April Fool’s joke, with a comment referencing it by saying: “The new naming rights sponsorship deal comes into play from April 1”.

Investment fraud

There has been a significant increase in investment fraud in Ireland that has seen €25 million stolen from people last year. Gardai said that a total of €25,360,000 was reported stolen in 2023, which is almost equal to the same amounts stolen in 2021 and 2022 (€14 million and €11.5 million respectively). In the first two months of this year, over 55 people have reported investment fraud, double the number of reports in January and February last year.
