Israel will press ahead with an offensive against Hamas in Rafah, the last refuge for displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza, after allowing civilians to vacate the area. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave no indication as to when the offensive might take place or where the hundreds of thousands of people now crammed into Rafah might go.

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin is holding talks in Dublin this morning with Commissioner-General of the UN’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini. The UN welfare agency for Palestinian refugees was established in 1949, a year after the State of Israel was founded, and nearly the entire Gaza population now relies on UNRWA for basics including food, water and hygiene.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration has become the latest backdrop for a mass shooting in the US as gunfire sent fans scrambling for cover and left 21 people wounded and one woman dead. At least eight children are among those who were shot. Yesterday’s shooting outside Union Station happened despite the presence of more than 800 police officers who were in the building and nearby, including on top of nearby structures, said mayor Quinton Lucas, who attended with his wife and mother and ran for safety when the shots rang out.

Private US Moon lander successfully launches 24 hours after flight was delayed

A US private moon lander has successfully launched 24 hours after its flight was delayed due to fuel issues. The Nova-C Odysseus lander, built by Texas-based space flight company Intuitive Machines (IM), could become the first private mission – called IM-1 – to land intact on the lunar surface. The Moon lander had lift-off at 6.05am Irish time this morning atop SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida, SpaceX posted on X.
