A woman with over 12 years’ experience in the fashion industry, personal stylist and fashion maven Viorica Caraus seeks to empower people through how they present themselves to the world.

It took me years to understand what my real mission was, but today, I can wholeheartedly say I’m exactly where I’m meant to be. Styling isn’t just a job for me, it’s my lifestyle. I always had a soft spot for fashion, but never imagined I’d turn it into a business that empowers people to express themselves and feel more confident through how they look.

My journey began in an unexpected way. I have a degree in Business Management and initially worked in marketing, but something inside told me it wasn’t my true calling. In 2011, I walked into a ZARA store and asked if they were hiring. I had no retail experience, just a strong desire to learn — and that simple step led to a whirlwind career managing teams for brands like Kurt Geiger, APM Monaco, Michael Kors, and even Victoria Beckham.

The turning point came during the COVID lockdown. I finally allowed myself to reconnect with what I truly loved — styling. I signed up for a few courses and, soon after graduating, was invited to mentor at the European School of Fashion. This month marks three years since I left my full-time job to follow my heart. It’s been the most rewarding and transformative time of my life.

Morning rituals and real-life rhythms

My days are rarely the same — weekday or weekend. I often work Saturdays and Sundays to accommodate clients with 9-5 schedules. Sleep routines? Let’s say they still need some work! I’m a night owl, often staying up late researching trends, analysing new collections, or quietly working on mood boards when the city is asleep.

One constant in my life is the morning coffee ritual with my husband. For years, he’s brought me espresso in bed, and we take that time to talk about our plans and reflect on life. It’s grounding, sacred, and sets the tone for a positive day. No matter how early I have to be up — I’ll always set the alarm to fit in that quiet moment.

Like many of us, I’m trying to improve my habits. One work-in-progress? Not grabbing my phone first thing in the morning! I’m getting better — keeping it on silent and not replying to messages after 9pm is my small win. I’m also striving to bring more movement into my life and recently signed up for an online yoga program by my friend and fellow IMAGE Business Club member, Margaret Young. Consistency is the goal!

A day in the life of a personal stylist

I don’t have fixed working hours — some days are eight hours long, others a bit shorter. But I do love the variety. One day might include a consultation in town, followed by pre-shopping to review collections in-store. Touching and feeling garments is essential for me before recommending anything to a client. Another day, I might be styling a branding photo shoot or diving into a full wardrobe detox at a client’s home.

Other days are spent entirely at home — working on mood boards, post-detox summaries, or building look books. Every client journey is deeply personal, so I only work with a limited number each week to give them my full attention. I also make time for networking events, which I find incredibly energising. Joining the IMAGE Business Club was one of the best decisions I’ve made — it’s brought wonderful people and friendships into my life.

What energises me the most is seeing transformation. When someone looks in the mirror and sees themselves with fresh eyes, it’s pure magic. I’ve received heartfelt messages after sessions that bring me to tears. That’s why I do what I do — not just for the end result, but for the journey we take together.

Finding balance (and remembering to eat!)

In the excitement of a full day, I sometimes forget to eat or hydrate — definitely not something I’m proud of, but I’m working on it. I don’t follow any diets but try to eat everything in moderation and love incorporating greens into my meals. I’m lucky that my husband is a great cook, and coming home to a warm, home-cooked dinner after a busy day is something I truly cherish.

My little treat when I’m on the go? A flat white with oat milk from Butlers, and that complimentary chocolate always lifts my mood!

Beauty and self-care

At 43, I’ve become more mindful of my skin and now stick (almost religiously!) to my evening beauty routine. It’s my way of slowing down and giving back to myself after a busy day. I use a mix of No7, Elemis, Lancome, and MGC Derma, finishing off with Rituals hand cream and Mario Badescu lip balm. On my day off, I might treat myself to an Environ face mask, read a good book, or head out for a family dinner with my husband and our 21-year-old son. We love catching up, laughing, and just being present together.

Recharging and advice from the heart

For me, the best way to replenish my energy and creativity is a trip away — somewhere warm, near the sea. I could spend hours just walking the promenade, breathing in the salt air, and enjoying beautiful food. It brings me calm, clarity, and endless inspiration. Just writing this makes me want to book something for summer!

If I could share one piece of advice with other women in business, it would be: slow down and really listen to yourself. Don’t compare your journey to others. Look back and celebrate how far you’ve come, no matter how small the steps. Trust yourself, be grateful, and keep believing. You’re exactly where you need to be.
