Auckland shooting
At least two people were killed and several others injured after a gunman stormed a building under construction in the New Zealand city of Auckland. The incident occurred just hours before the first match of the Women’s World Cup was scheduled to begin nearby. A male gunman was also killed, police said in a post on Twitter.
Rental protection scheme
Threshold has called on the Government to institute a scheme that would protect tenants who have issues getting their rental deposits back from landlords after receiving almost 200 requests for assistance in retrieving deposits in the second quarter of this year. The proposed scheme would see deposits lodged with an independent third party rather than the landlord.
Russian strikes
Russian strikes on Ukrainian port areas have continued after Moscow warned that ships heading to Ukraine’s Black Sea ports could be considered military targets. As concerns grew over Russia pulling out of a deal that has protected global shipments of Ukrainian grain, authorities in the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions reported some 20 people injured in the strikes.
Limerick harpist
A Limerick-based harpist has landed in Tanzania to begin a bid to beat her own Guinness World Record, this time on Mount Kilimanjaro. Siobhan Brady is to take on the hike today, having previously achieved the record for the highest altitude harp performance in 2018 at Singla Pass, India, at more than 16,000ft. To beat her previous feat, she needs to play the harp for 18 minutes, with a Tanzanian jig.
Kildare hit and run
Gardaí are looking for information after a driver fled from the scene of a crash in which a passenger was fatally injured in Co Kildare. The crash involving a truck and a car occurred on the R403 in Celbridge at approximately 10.50pm on Tuesday. Gardaí said a passenger from the car, a man in his 20s, was fatally injured. However, the driver of the car “failed to remain at the scene”.
