Crumlin hospital warns youngsters getting severe frostbite from ‘laughing gas’ high
Doctors at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin have warned youngsters are presenting with severe frostbite injuries after using nitrous oxide – commonly known as laughing gas – to get high. The gas, which is not allowed to be sold for consumption, is commonly used in the catering industry. When consumed by people, it can cause a euphoric effect but also has other negative side effects if the user is exposed for a long period, including memory loss, vitamin B12 depletion, which can lead to brain and nerve damage and balance issues. Because of its use in other industries, nitrous oxide is not a controlled substance. Now, a doctor in Dublin is warning about the other impacts consuming laughing gas can have, including frostbite injuries.

Fishing crisis may see prices increase and job losses without intervention, says industry
Consumers will be hit with a hike to fish prices unless the State intervenes to tackle a crisis in Irish fishing, the industry has warned. The number of fish being processed by the main plants in Ireland is now at the lowest level ever recorded by the industry, sparking concerns about job losses and rising prices for consumers. Last year, the processing industry suffered a 45% decline in the amount of fish being landed in Irish ports and processed in the country’s biggest plants, based in Killybegs, Co Donegal. That decline has worsened in 2024, according to figures for January and February, the Irish Fish Processors and Exporters Association has warned.

Haiti PM Ariel Henry in Puerto Rico as gang violence continues
Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry has landed in Puerto Rico after apparently being unable to return to his country. According to local media, he arrived in the capital San Juan on Tuesday after flying from the US state of New Jersey. For the past few days, Mr Henry’s whereabouts had been unknown following a visit to Kenya. Violence in Haiti has spiralled in his absence – with armed gangs trying to take over the international airport to stop him from landing. Their leader, Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, has demanded the prime minister stand down – warning that the country is headed “straight for a civil war that will lead to genocide” otherwise.
