Woman and two girls killed in horror crash on Mayo’s N17, gardaí continued efforts to contact family last night
The horrific death of a young woman and two young girls in a crash on the N17 in Mayo has led to widespread shock as gardaí last night continued efforts to contact the family. It is understood close family members of the victims are overseas and gardaí are canvassing neighbours of the deceased to ascertain contact details of the next of kin. It is understood the woman who died was aged in her 30s and the girls were under 10. They were not from the local area and they are all related to one another.

Ireland moves towards intervening in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel
Foreign affairs minister Micheál Martin and his department officials are to prepare a declaration of intervention in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. The tánaiste is to update the cabinet about this today. If the move is approved, the Irish government will officially intervene in the case against Israel under the 1948 Genocide Convention at the court in The Hague in the Netherlands. It is currently not known what legal points the state is relying on in its declaration.

Warrant for garda wrongly suspected of stealing bicycle had inaccurate information
The warrant used to search the home of the garda wrongly suspected of stealing a bicycle from his station contained false or incorrect information, the Irish Examiner has learned. Last week, the final report from a disciplinary tribunal was sent to garda headquarters, nearly four years after the garda’s home was raided by members of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NBCI).

Use of modular units in plan to overhaul immigration system
The cabinet will consider plans aimed at overhauling the immigration system. Minister for integration Roderic O’Gorman will bring forward what has been described as a comprehensive accommodation strategy for international protection applicants. The strategy aims to address the immediate crisis in international protection accommodation while undertaking longer-term system reform by moving away from a total reliance on private providers towards a core of state-owned accommodation.

Ship set to be boarded after six presumed dead in Baltimore bridge collapse
Six construction workers are presumed dead after a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday. Rescue efforts have been called off and investigators now hope to board the vessel to retrieve its data recorder. The bridge snapped and plunged into the Patapsco River on Tuesday, at about 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT), after the Dali container ship crashed into it. The vessel had lost power and issued a distress call moments before – but was travelling too quickly to change course.

AI ‘apocalypse’ could take away almost 8m jobs in UK, says report
Almost 8 million UK jobs could be lost to artificial intelligence in a “jobs apocalypse”, according to a report warning that women, younger workers and those on lower wages are at most risk from automation. The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) said that entry-level, part-time and administrative jobs were most exposed to being replaced by AI under a “worst-case scenario” for the rollout of new technologies in the next three to five years. The think tank warned that the UK was facing a “sliding doors” moment as growing numbers of companies adopt generative AI technologies – which can read and create text, data and software code – to automate everyday workplace tasks.
