Amy Schumer has opened up about her health struggles once again, revealing that she’s just undergone major surgery as a result of her endometriosis diagnosis. A debilitating health condition whereby tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts growing in other parts of the body, it’s a long-term disease that affects roughly 10% of reproductive age women and girls globally.
Sharing a mirror selfie of herself kitted out in the typical hospital garb, Schumer captioned the post “if you have really painful periods you may have #endometriosis”. Also sharing a short clip detailing what exactly she had done, it shows her lying in her hospital bed the morning after her operation.
“So it’s the morning after my surgery for endometriosis. My uterus is out,” she explained. “The doctor found 30 spots of endometriosis he removed. He removed my appendix because endometriosis had attacked it. There was a lot of blood in my uterus. I’m sore and I have some gas pains,” she continued before she’s cut off as the video abruptly ends mid-sentence.
Currently recovering in hospital after her surgery, Amy’s post garnered a huge reaction online with friends, family and fans all sending her their well-wishes. Several thanked Schumer for being so open about the whole thing, including celebrity chef Padma Lakshmi, who co-founded the non-profit organisation the Endometriosis Foundation of America. “Thank you so much for sharing your endo story,” she wrote. “Over 200 million women worldwide suffer with endometriosis. Hope you feel better soon!”
Former iCarly star Jennette McCurdy also shared her own recent endometriosis diagnosis, commenting, “I was just told this by my gynaecologist! I’m bedridden for 24 hours once a month. Thank you for talking about this. Wishing you a speedy recovery.”
Always forthcoming on the topic of fertility, the actress has spoken candidly about her struggles to get pregnant as well as the many hurdles she faced throughout her pregnancy too. First becoming a mum back in May 2019, Amy gave birth to her son, Gene, via cesarean section. Suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum (a severe form of morning sickness, for which there is no cure), she was in and out of the hospital several times before her due date.
Previously saying that having a second child, though physically possible, would put a huge strain on her body, Amy and her husband, Chris Fischer, did decide to try for another child with the couple confirming they would be going down the IVF route. Beginning the process back in January of last year, it proved to be too much for Schumer who said that she didn’t think she could “ever do IVF again”.
“We did IVF, and IVF was really tough on me. I don’t think I could ever do IVF again. And so I decided that I can’t be pregnant ever again,” she told TODAY’s Willie Geist in August 2020. “We thought about a surrogate, but I think we’re gonna hold off for right now.” Still open to the possibility of expanding their family, Amy said that she’d love to have a second child, later telling Ashley Graham on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she and her husband are “trying to figure it out”.
