Israel-Hamas ceasefire and hostage release delayed until at least tomorrow
Israel has said a four-day Gaza truce and hostage release will not start until at least tomorrow, stalling a breakthrough deal to pause the war with Hamas. Israeli national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi indicated the release of at least 50 Israeli and foreign hostages held by Hamas was still on track, but would not happen today as expected.

Dublin gang uses rural Airbnb as base to carry out 20 burglaries in five days
Members of one of Ireland’s most prolific burglary gangs used an Airbnb rental as a base for a crime wave in which up to 20 homes were robbed in under five days. The Dublin-based gang rented the property near Knock, Co Mayo, earlier this month to carry out the burglaries in three counties. The innocent host of the property was unaware that some of the country’s most prolific organised burglary gang criminals were staying at the house.

€1,000 reduction in third level college fees comes into effect
Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris has announced further details on the cost of education measures first outlined in the Budget. A reduction of €1,000 in undergraduate fees has now been applied to all students’ accounts reducing the cost of college for 96,000 students by 33%. Students, or their families, who have paid the full student contribution of €3,000 are being refunded.

Ireland to scrap Triple Lock preventing Irish troops from deployment without UN approval – Tánaiste
Tánaiste Micheál Martin has announced plans to scrap the Triple Lock which prevents Ireland deploying troops overseas without UN approval. In a wide-ranging speech, which also included commitments to greater international military co-operation and domestic security, Mr Martin said he wants Ireland to be able to respond to crises without waiting for approval from the UN Security Council, which has not authorised a new peacekeeping mission since 2014. Under the Triple Lock system, 12 or more Defence Forces troops cannot be deployed on an active overseas mission without approval from the Dáil, the Government and authorisation from the UN.

GAA players use VR game to learn about their testicles
GAA players have used a virtual reality (VR) game with walnuts to help tackle testicular cancer in the first trial of its kind here to promote men’s health. Some 74 players from nine clubs took part in the University College Cork (UCC) study which has shown how VR games can promote and increase men’s awareness of testicular diseases, and help them to perform more effective self-exams.

Light rain or drizzle in the north in the morning will slowly sink southwards, becoming patchier as it does so, followed by clearer, drier weather. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees in moderate to fresh west to northwest winds, strong in Ulster, especially in the northwest. Cloudy over the southern half of the country at first with a few spots of light rain or drizzle before drier, clearer conditions in the north extends southwards. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees generally, milder in the southwest with more persistent cloud there. West to northwest winds will ease mostly light to moderate but will remain fresher in the northeast.
