DART services suspended due to ‘tragic incident’, Portlaoise Station suspended as vehicle hits bridge
DART services are not operating through Clongriffin station in Dublin due to an “incident” on the line, Irish Rail has said.
Services between Howth Junction and Malahide are suspended until further notice as a result. The incident occurred shortly before 8am.

Principal suspended amid allegations of emotional and physical abuse of students
The principal of a post-primary school has been suspended amid allegations of the emotional and physical abuse of students over several years. Child protection agency Tusla and gardaí are investigating the claims, as is the Education and Training Board (ETB), which is patron of the school. The allegations include the forced partial undressing by the principal of an autistic pupil in front of other students, the removal of special toys that autistic children use as a calming tool, inappropriate physical contact with students, including hugging them and sitting on their laps, and the verbal belittling of children attending the school. The allegations were sent to the ETB in question earlier this year by staff at the school.

Post mortem due to take place for eight-year-old girl recovered off Cork coast
A post mortem is due to be carried out later today on the eight-year-old girl who died in a drowning off a Co Cork beach. Her body was recovered at around 7.45pm around three hours after the alarm was raised in Fountainstown yesterday afternoon. It is understood the girl was swept out to sea and was found by a member of the public along with an individual from the lifeboat crew of Crosshaven RNLI after they spotted her body near the shore yesterday evening. The two people went in to the sea when they spotted the body in the water at around 7.30pm yesterday. She was taken to Crosshaven Lifeboat Station where her family members had gathered.

Plan seeks speed limit cuts in effort to reduce accident numbers
Speed limits across national, local and arterial roads are to be cut significantly under a major overhaul aimed at addressing a spike in accidents and fatalities. Motorists will have to reduce their speed by 20km/h on many roads across the country under the new limits, which will see the maximum speed allowed on national secondary roads drop from 100km/h to 80km/h.

The Proud Boys’ former leader Enrique Tarrio has been jailed for 22 years for orchestrating the attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. It is the longest sentence handed down so far to a ringleader over the attack, as US lawmakers were certifying President Joe Biden’s victory. Tarrio, 39, was not in Washington during the riot, but helped organise the far-right group’s involvement. More than 1,100 people have been arrested on Capitol riot charges.

The number of under-50s worldwide being diagnosed with cancer has risen by nearly 80% in three decades, according to the largest study of its kind. Global cases of early onset cancer increased from 1.82 million in 1990 to 3.26 million in 2019, while cancer deaths of adults in their 40s, 30s or younger grew by 27%. More than a million under-50s a year are now dying of cancer, the research reveals. Experts are still in the early stages of understanding the reasons behind the rise in cases.
