7 ways to deal with those unwanted grey hairs during lockdown

Are grey hairs starting to peek through? Here are 7 ways to hide them, as recommended by the experts

The coronavirus pandemic has made us fearful about a lot of things.

Our family, children, health, jobs, and life as we knew it.

Then there is the issue of our hair. They say you don’t know what you have got until it’s gone – this is how we collectively feel about hairdressers, once again.

For many women, the issue of grey hairs can cause consternation. However, grey hairs are one of the easiest hair troubles to manage and hide without going for your monthly hair appointment.

Root touch-up powders, pens and sprays

Whoever came up with this idea is a bonafide genius. Going to the hair salon is an expensive hobby, but these gizmos enable you to delay the excursion for a longer period of time. From blondes to brunettes, many brands cover most of the colour spectrum. Plus, they wash out, meaning unwelcome hair disasters will not occur.

At-home colour kits

Beware, this only works on base colours. Don’t attempt highlights, lowlights, or any other form of lights on your hair. Blonde tones are also trickier to master, so darker hair colours will find this method easier and more successful. If you aren’t confident with the process, then it is best to leave your hair until the salons re-open. However, if you are up for the challenge, there is a myriad of tutorials online from Teri Hatcher to professional hairstylists showing you how to DIY your locks.

We particularly like this video below from Josh Wood, one of London’s leading hair colourists.

Change your part

This isn’t rocket science, but it is a hair hack recommended by the experts at L’Oreal to cover grey hairs. Simply changing the part or style of your hair can quickly make grey hairs disappear.

Work with your natural hair texture

The wise indiviuals of Redken advise that pin-straight hair and tight updos exaggerate the look of grey roots. Embrace your waves and your curls, work with the natural kinks and this will lessen the severity of roots.

Plait your hair

If your hair is long enough, plait it. The hairstyle gives the appearance of a dimensional hair colour and will lead onlookers to believe you got it done on purpose.

Experiment with headpieces

We agree that wearing a full-blown fedora may not work for Zoom conference calls, but on a trip to the supermarket, they will make your oufit altogether more stylish. For the dreaded video calls, why not try out a hairband or scarf? Our resident headpiece guru Lucy White has put together a list of the best you can buy now that you can read here.

Embrace it

While it may be difficult at first, try and embrace the grey. Celebrities such as Jane Fonda and Sharon Osbourne have accepted theirs and they look incredible. This lockdown won’t be forever and our hair will once again be in the safe hands of our beloved hairdressers.

But until then, why not embody the real you?

Who knows, you may even prefer it.
