Scent your way abroad with location-inspired perfumes

by Holly O'Neill
14th Jul 2021

Travel the world from home with an olfactory journey this summer.

Ready to scent your way abroad? It might be another summer like no other, but as restrictions ever so slightly begin to lift and the temperature rises, we’re looking forward to the gluttony of summer at home; neglecting the inbox a little more than usual, Instagramming our way through a vat of Aperol Spritz, a full fridge of White Claws, dressing only in floral midi dresses and hunting down the perfect pair of sandals.

While the possibilities of traveling abroad this summer to let off some steam still hangs in the balance, we’re looking at taking an olfactory journey instead, so even if this summer is spent in our back gardens, we can scent our way to summer at the Amalfi coast with these sunshine-drenched perfumes.

Louis Vuitton California Dream, €225

Louis Vuitton collaborated with multimedia artist and Los Angeles native Alex Israel – whose work and tributes to sunset skies is inspired by his home city – and master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, who painted his own interpretation of the LA sky at sunset in scent. The fragrance is citrusy and musky, with mandarin, pear, musk and warm benzoin; it’s balmy as a summer night and packaged in a bottle that resembles a hazy candyfloss sunset.

Proenza Schouler Arizona, €113.13

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the duo behind Proenza Schouler, like to escape after a collection to recharge their creative juices. In 2016, they escaped to Arizona, and it became the inspiration for their first fragrance. “It’s not necessarily the state of Arizona, but a state of mind,” they told IMAGE ahead of the launch. The bottle is inspired by a quartz crystal, and the fragrance itself captures the spirit of Arizona, with the main ingredient being the synthesised scent of cactus flower, which blooms for one day a year at night and then dies the next morning.

Armani/Privé Orangerie Venise, €157

Created by master perfumer Dominique Ropion (Portrait of a Lady, Flowerbomb, La Vie Est Belle and lots more perfumes you love), the brief for this blend was ‘Venetian orangerie’ and that’s the best description you’ll find. Neroli perfection, the lightest, freshest scent — this is summer bottled.

Maison Margiela Paris Replica Beach Walk, €56.50

Maison Margiela’s Replica series of scents are recreations of locations and periods, like Lazy Sunday Morning, Music Festival and Beach Walk, which is a composition of bright bergamot, pink pepper and lemon, with warm coconut milk, musk and benzoin for a scent intended to bring to mind a summer day, with sun on your skin and sand in your feet on a walk by the ocean.

TOM FORD Neroli Portofino 50ml | Brown Thomas

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, €198

Floral notes, amber and crisp citrus oils capture the clear water, lush foliage and warmth of the Italian Riviera in one of Tom Ford’s most sought-after scents, bottled in the exactly correct green-blue shade of a Slim Aarons photograph.

scent

Byredo Bal D’Afrique, €190

Bal d’Afrique is one of Byredo founder Ben Gorham’s earliest fragrances, inspired by his father’s diaries about living and traveling in Africa and the African infatuation of late 1920s Paris. The scent is warm and romantic with Moroccan cedarwood, musk and black amber, and refreshing lemon, bergamot and African marigold.

Atelier Cologne - Clementine California Cologne Absolue Spray 30ml ...

Atelier Cologne Clémentine California, €120

Built around clementine from California, this energising fragrance combines bright citrus, green juniper and a warm base of vetiver, sandalwood and cypress for a sweet, fresh and summery everyday scent.

Zara x Jo Malone Amalfi Sunray, €25.95

If you’re looking for a new sun-drenched summer scent, this collaboration with high street retailer Zara and perfume legend Jo Malone is the one you want to zap yourself instantly to the Italian coast. With bergamot, mandarin, basil and orange flower, this blend of orange heaven is most like another iconic Jo Malone London scent you’ve probably known and loved, the fresh and floral Basil and Neroli.
