Need something to entertain the kids this weekend? Distract from Storm Ciara with these family-friendly events
The weather looks set to be pretty dismal this weekend, but that’s no excuse to stay cooped up in the house. Midterm is just around the corner, and if the kids are already bouncing off the walls, there are plenty of great events around the country to keep them occupied.
Need some inspiration? Here are four of our favourites.
Run by the Ark’s current Early Years artist in residence Joanna Parkes, this weekend’s workshop is all about getting your little ones interested in the wild, and all the animals that live there. In this interactive drama, kids and grown-ups are encouraged to use props and materials to create a play habitat for a number of different animals, including a koala, a polar bear and an orangutan. Tickets available from Ark.
This drop-in workshop takes place from 10am til 4:30pm and each session takes around 30 minutes. Fossils from the museum’s own collection will be on display, as the museum facilitator teaches kids about the history behind the animals through arts and crafts. If you still want more, the entry charge (€5 per adult, free for children) covers entry to the whole museum, so feel free to spend the day.
Two performances take place at the National Concert Hall tomorrow featuring some of most talented musicians from around the country. This is the 25th year of the festival and it’s the perfect opportunity to get your kids excited about classical music, and maybe interested in learning an instrument themselves. The show will feature classics such as Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 ‘Pathétique, along with modern classics from the Beatles, Lady Gaga and plenty of Irish works too. Tickets from €20.
A special two-day event takes place this weekend at the National Museum, exploring the joys of gardening, nature and biodiversity in Ireland. Featuring workshops, guest speakers, arts and crafts and a family fair, it’s the perfect way to get the little ones into nature and interested in the world around them. Best of all, admission is completely free.
