BAFTAs 2020: All the winners

by Jennifer McShane

Once the BAFTAs rolled out the red carpet for its Hollywood stars, it was down to business, but there was no escaping movie industry’s diversity problem which lingered ominously in the background.

Among the winner’s highlights, British director Sam Mendes’ 1917 emerged victorious with seven awards while Joaquin Phoenix and Reneé Zellwegger both took home top honours for Best Actor and Best Actress for their performances in Joker and Judy respectively.

Laura Dern took home the Best Supporting Actress award – the same BAFTA award accepted by her mother, Diane Ladd, for her supporting role in Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore – for Marriage Story, while Parasite was the surprise winner for Best Original Screenplay, taking the winning streak from Quentin Tarantino, who has won for Once Upon A Time in Hollywood in that category in every award show prior.

Brad Pitt, however, won for his role in the film, with his co-star Margot Robbie accepting the award on his behalf.

The #BaftasSoWhite controversy was noted by host Graham Norton, who was on sparkling form, but Phoenix was the first nominee to address it directly in this acceptance speech, saying he appreciated the win but felt conflicted accepting it, “because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege.”

“I think we send a very clear message to people of colour that you are not welcome here, people who have contributed so much to our medium and our industry,” he added.
