Ben Platt’s covers of Adele and Kacey Musgraves are the only things getting me through lockdown

If you are not already a fan of Ben Platt, you will be by the end of this article, I promise. Come forth and meet this life-affirming human with the purest voice known to mankind.

If you’re in need of a little pick-me-up every once in a while (or, like me, twice an hour), please take a moment for the soaring, unadulterated bari-tenor of Ben Platt.

The singer/actor/Broadway thesp has been performing from home while the world is on lockdown and his cover of Kacey Musgrave’s “Rainbow” has been carrying me through these endless days of pacing, cleaning and eating, pacing, cleaning and eating. He sings to me while I wash the dishes, clean out that cupboard, croons to me quietly as I read and lulls me to sleep at night.

Don’t believe me? Have a listen for yourself…

I think it’s the purity of it that is comforting me at the minute, as we find the limits of the endless scroll and instead return to books, puzzles, catching up with family and friends, and home-cooked meals. In other words, simple pleasures.

I know I’m not the first to join the Ben Platt fanclub. He came onto the scene as the awkward roommate in Pitch Perfect and then won a Tony for his performance in the titular role of Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen, before releasing his first album and taking the lead in Netflix’s The Politician.

It all started on March 2 with Labrinth’s painfully beautiful “Jealous” that really just gets you with all the high notes. However, it was his latest video that had me crying into my dinner (of Coco Pops). Adele’s “All I Ask” gets me in the gut at the best of times but Platt’s four-octave range in this rendition hit me like a freight train.

And aren’t we all deserve a good cry while on lockdown, it’s just shedding that excess energy not spent on commuting, queuing for a coffee or ploughing through your third “so, how was your weekend?” office conversation.

Still not convinced? Here’s one more of a Billy Joel “Vienna” cover, because I simply do not know when to stop gushing over Ben Platt. There’s plenty more goodness over on his ‘gram too, would highly recommend an afternoon lost to it.
