29th Dec 2015
There can be little doubting it; 2015 was a year of heartbreak for many a celebrity. It seemed every other day we were writing about another couple who decided to call it a day. Some shocked us (Jen and Ben), others we could see coming (Avril Lavigne), but all-in-all, it wasn’t a good year for love. Charlize Theron set the ball rolling in June and over the next few months many followed, ending with Kate Beckinsale splitting from her director husband Len Wiseman late last month. Here are the biggest break up stories of the year:
Ben Affleck And Jennifer Garner
In early July this seemingly solid couple put an end to months of speculation be announcing their separation the day after their 10th wedding anniversary.?Affleck’s gambling habit was seen as spiralling and rumours of infidelity were starting to swirl, prior to the split (and there was that unflattering rumour about the nanny), but they remained low-key in the months that followed, and we’re still a bit sad that they are no more.
Gwen Stefani And Gavin Rossdale?
At first we were happy at the fact that they seemed to handle their split with maturity – it was a fairly shocking announcement after all, as they had been married 13 years – but then rumours surfaced that saw modern technology catch up with?Rossdale as numerous reports revealed? that he had a three-year long affair with the couple’s Australian nanny. Allegedly, the affair came to light when Gwen came across explicit messages, including nude images, on the family iPad. He wasn’t left looking good, but Stefani has happily moved on and is seeing?and is seeing her co-judge on The Voice, country music singer, Blake Shelton.
Emma Stone And Andrew Garfield
Spiderman stars Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield dated on-and-off for four years, before going on a break and calling it quits for good in September this year. They two are still on friendly terms though and have been spotted eating out together since, but Garfield has denied they are back together.?
Amanda Seyfried And Justin Long
We were?genuinely‘sad to hear that Amanda Seyfried and Justin Long called it quits after two years because the story of how they got together will restore your faith in online dating. Justin posted a witty comment to Instagram which caught Amanda’s eye and after a few months of back and fourth, the pair made each other laugh in real life. Justin at 37 was said to have wanted to settle down, whereas the 29-year-old Mamma Mia star wasn’t ready.?
Halle Berry And Olivier Martinez
Actors Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez divorced?after just over two years of marriage. Reports suggested the split was amicable and both said the relationship came to a natural end.?They?have two-year-old son Maceo-Robert together,?and were said to have ‘drifted apart? thanks to hectic work schedules.
Avril Lavigne And Chad Kroeger?
This couple married so suddenly that we weren’t all that surprised to hear that they had called time on the short union.?Lavinge announced her split from her husband of two years on her Instagram. And while the two reportedly hit a few rocky patches and remained largely apart during the final months, it was thought that the pairing died a death after she?announced earlier this year she was suffering from Lyme’s disease, a debilitating condition which damages one’s nervous system. Avril was out of action for a few months while she was undergoing treatment, but her health seems to be on a good track now, with her talking of releasing new music next year.
Kate Beckinsale And Len Wiseman
This actor slash director pairing ended their 11-year marriage last month. The 42-year-old actress and the 42-year-old director separated several months ago and according to sources ?there has been no drama? as that is ?just not Kate’s style.? News of the separation was more or less confirmed when Wiseman was recently snapped arm-in-arm with a young model sans wedding ring, though both are said to be on friendly terms.
Mandy Moore And Ryan Adams
This’divorcing couple managed to keep their names out of the headlines until singer and actress Mandy Moore more made the headlines for?asking her soon-to-be ex pay her spousal support and help cover the costs associated with caring for at least four of their eight pets. He has a substantial income compared to Moore, so she felt it justified that he should contribute to costing. An otherwise low-key split turned not so nice. They were married for six years.
Charlize Theron And Sean Penn
We were all surprised to hear that Theron apparently called off the pair’s engagement after a year and a half, apparently by “ghosting” him.?Penn and Theron had been together since December 2013. Before becoming a couple they were friends, and both won best acting Oscars the same year. Theron, 39, and Penn, 54, got engaged last December, and it seemed as if they were going to stick it out. Penn seemed to adore Theron, correcting a journalist who described her as his girlfriend. “She’s not my girlfriend. She’s the love of my life,” he reportedly said. And we all swooned. A couple we genuinely thought would be together for the long haul.
