Coldest Winter Since 1963?

snowy lane and trees

Lord Jesus, we’re quivering in our boots just reading about this. Though the image of a white Christmas will always excite us – thanks Bing Crosby – the term ‘freak polar vortex’ certainly does not. Yep, apparently this is what’s more than likely in store for the Irish over the coming weeks, marking the winter of 2014 the coldest one since 1963. Met Eireann say it’s still too soon for exact predictions, but warns us that heavy snow, bitterly cold winds and dangerously icy roads could well be on the way and are thus expected to issue a series of weather warning to all road users in the run up to the 25th.

Worryingly for the sick and elderly, temperatures could plummet to as low as -10 degrees celsius as this vortex takes over the gulf stream which, as you know, is what dictates the Irish weather patterns. After the disaster that was the winter of 2010, when icy road conditions lead the country towards a total standstill, the RSA have reassured us this year that they quite literally have TONNES of salt and grit, should this vortex wreak havoc on the Emerald Isle. While we must wait and see how this all pans out, what we can do is get ourselves set with the wooliest of winter woollies, should Jack Frost take over the country. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.
