Something the whole family can enjoy this Christmas: Enchanted Lights at Kildare Village

See the magic of Christmas through your child’s eyes with this epic Enchanted Lights installation spreading festive cheer at Kildare Village.

Christmas is all about family time, and what’s more epic than immersing yourself in a fully interactive experience the whole family can enjoy this festive season?

Kildare Village has pulled out all the stops with its Enchanted Lights experience this year.

Created using LED lights and projection mapping features, the complimentary extravaganza is a feast for the eyes, ears and feels.

Ciara Finn, senior producer with Algorithm, helped create the project with Kildare Village. She tells image.ie that this project is one the team are particularly proud of, for its accessibility.

“There are often events around Christmas aimed at families, but we wanted to do something that was very much accessible to all kinds of people,” says Ciara. “We are particularly proud of this project because Kildare Village has made it complimentary for families, which isn’t often the case with these things.

“At Algorithm we often talked about producing a public art space where people could bring their children, so with this project we were delighted we were able to make that come to life. It’s living in a space where people can simply come just to visit it, at no extra cost, and it really adds to the Christmas cheer.”

The instalment is a fully interactive display stretching from Kildare Village’s Grey Abbey lawn right onto the store buildings themselves.

Anne McGinley, senior visual merchandising manager at Kildare Village, said the goal was to deliver “a magical and memorable experience for our guests, one which would captivate and delight both adults and children alike”.

“It was important for us to create an authentic and unique experience, which would complement and elevate the already beautiful surroundings of the village and the Abbey,” says Anne.

“Enchanted Lights, an exciting, engaging and fully immersive lighting experience, is the result of a year-long collaboration with Algorithm. Having visited one of their shows in Dublin, we were blown away by their execution, creativity and enthusiasm and were very excited to collaborate with such a talented and pioneering Irish company.”

Children are invited to control the LED touchscreen, which changes the field of white lights on the grass. When passersby walk under the Geometric Tunnel, it generates sound and visual patterns. A series of engaging animations of animals and festive themes light up the buildings.

Used to working with musical entities at festivals across the country, Ciara says that the Enchanted Lights is a special one as it’s such a departure from the trance, dance and techno stages Algorithm often install lights on.

“It’s the biggest project of its kind that’s been done in Ireland before,” says Ciara. “It was an ambitious venture, it’s very rewarding to see children light up when they come in. Children are much more loose in their reactions compared to adults – the kids have no problem exclaiming out loud with their excitement which is lovely to see.”

Ciara said her hardest job was using the projection mapping to complement the already beautiful aesthetic of Kildare Village.

Enchanted Lights at Kildare Village is open from 4pm daily throughout the festive season. For more on Enchanted Lights click here. For more on Algorithm, click here.
