There’s a ripple of sniffles and coughs moving through the house this week. It’s no longer a question of, ‘Anyone for tea’; more like, ‘Anyone for paracetamol?’.

At this time of year, it’s to be expected. The weather is changeable and our immune systems are taking the hit. If, like us, you aim to recuperate in bed, have a look at these films on Netflix. Each film listed below is upbeat, feel-good and girly; perfect for sick-bed entertainment.
Barbra: The Music, The Mem’ries, The Magic (2017)
This Netflix Original follows Barbra Streisand on her recent 13-city concert tour; during which she shares backstage antics and memorable moments from her career. Throughout the music-filled documentary, Barbra is joined by special showbiz guests, with whom she performs (and reflects on) songs from times gone by. With an audience score of 100% on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, this feel-good film will almost make you forget you’re ill.
Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016)
They (whoever ‘they’ are) say sequels are never as good as the original, but the third instalment of Bridget Jones proves them wrong. Here Renée Zellweger takes on the role of Bridget for one final time. Bridget finds herself unexpectantly pregnant at the age of 43. She feels completely unprepared, and she isn’t sure who the father is. Could it be her one true love Mark Darcy? Or could the dad be Jack Qwant, the handsome man she met at an Ed Sheeran concert? This classic rom-com love triangle will surely lift your mood.
The Intern (2015)
Starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, The Intern is the ultimate feel-good flick. A 70-year-old man is hired as an intern at a busy online sales company. Diving into the tech world he once feared, De Niro’s character develops a heart-warming father/daughter bond with his 30-year-old boss. It’s funny, warm and thought-provoking all at once.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
Based on Jenny Han’s 2014 novel of the same name, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a beautiful (and funny) teen romance film. It tells the tale of a high school student who has written (but never sent) letters to the boys she fancies. There are five in total, but the letters are private and for her eyes only. That is, until, they somehow get out. The film is charming and relatable, even to an adult audience. It’s a sick-bed must-watch.
Monster-In-Law (2005)
What happens when your partner’s mother attempts to destroy your relationship? Jennifer Lopez’s character Charlie learned the hard way. Her monster-in-law (a.k.a. Jane Fonda) goes to extreme lengths to push her away; even forcing her to wear a dress that’s far too small. When Charlie realises what her in-law is trying to do, she fights back. And it’s hilarious.
Notting Hill (1999)
You’ve probably already seen this BAFTA-winning rom-com, but it’s a gem worth watching again and again. Starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, the film documents two unlikely lovers. One is a Hollywood celebrity, the other is a divorced owner of a book store. Their paths cross unexpectantly, not only bringing joy to the viewer, but fantastic quotes like this one: “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”
13 Going On 30 (2004)
Starring Jennifer Garner, 13 Going On 30 follows a teenage girl called Jenna who dreams of being popular. When she is humiliated by classmates during her 13th birthday party, she wishes she were older (30, to be precise) – old enough to escape the high school drama. Suddenly, Jenna wakes up to find herself 30 years old, uncertain of how she got there. Could all her dreams finally be answered? Or is there more drama afoot? This film is fun and upbeat, with a banging eighties soundtrack to match.
