Get your scrunchies ready, a Saved by the Bell re-boot is coming

Get your scrunchies ready, a Saved by the Bell re-boot is coming

saved by the bell re-boot

NBC have just announced that there will be a Saved by the Bell re-boot and now we’re feeling nostalgic

For many millenials, Saved by the Bell is part of our childhood. Along with Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Clarissa Explains It All, this goes down as one of the most quoted and loved teen shows of the 90’s.

After-school dinners with the TV on and slow Saturday mornings were always spent watching the same episodes we’d already seen 100 times. Before we had Sky Plus boxes and Netflix, we had re-runs. So many re-runs. Perhaps this is why shows like Saved by the Bell are so quotable and nostalgic, because they are buried deep into our memories (or at least the intro-music is).

The series, which aired 30 years ago this year, is being updated by NBC Universal. This coincides with the studio’s other announcement, that they are launching their very own streaming service, Peacock in April next year. And one of the first shows they’ve announced? A Saved by the Bell re-boot.

Although we don’t have a name for the new season just yet, we do know that Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie Spano) and Mario Lopez (A.C Slater) will be joining the re-boot. Sadly, our teenage heart-throb Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack Morris) won’t be re-joining the show, although his character will be featured.

The new series will follow Jessie and Slater as they navigate their lives as new parents. As well as this, it will feature Bay Side High and a whole new generation of teenagers attending the school, but no news on Mr Belding just yet.

Apparently, the character of Zack Morris is the governor of California in the re-boot, who after closing “too many low-income high schools, proposes to send affected students to the highest performing schools in the state, including Bayside High.” Judging from how much he got away with in the earlier version of the show, we can imagine him perfectly as a governor getting away with much worse but still remaining inherently likable.

Will it be able to capture the charm of the early seasons? We don’t have the highest of hopes, as nothing can beat the 1980’s interiors and outfits we loved so much from the original show. Also, nothing will ever top the episode where Zack and Slater fight at school, nothing.

But we won’t dismiss it just yet, if they keep the original theme tune they may well win us over.
