This marks the second time that 17-year-old Thunberg has been nominated for the award
Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
Thunberg was put forward by two Swedish lawmakers for the award, who said that she “has worked hard to make politicians open their eyes to the climate crisis” and “action for reducing our emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is therefore also an act of making peace”.
Thunberg came to international fame in 2018, when she began striking from school to draw attention to climate change. Her actions encouraged other students to do the same, and soon an international school strike movement against climate change was launched. Thunberg has since spoken internationally about the dangers of climate change and has addressed the United Nations on multiple occasions. Last year, she was named as Time’s youngest-ever individual Person of the Year.
This is the second year in a row that Thunberg has been nominated for the award, and if she wins, will be part of just a handful of women who have won the Nobel Peace Prize. Previous female winners include Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan, who founded the Northern Ireland Peace Movement; Mother Theresa; and most recently, Malala Yousafzai in 2014, for her work in promoting peace and education for girls in the Middle East.
