Here’s how you can watch a new short film starring Paul Mescal

Paul Mescal fans, this one is for you…

A 14-minute short film starring Paul Mescal is set to stream as part of this year’s Dublin International Film Festival. Titled Drifting, the film revolves around two friends, charting their lives as they begin to grow apart.

Drifting tells the tale of Cian (Mescal) and Pat (Dafhyd Flynn) who have been best friends since they were young boys. Pat becomes curious about the world beyond the confines of their small-town life while Cian seems content, and a strain grows on their friendship.

Initially premiering in 2020, Drifting is co-written and co-directed by filmmaker Robert Higgins, who made the announcement via Twitter.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival (VMDIFF)  will be held virtually this year, so the film will be available to watch online from March 3rd to March 14th.

Drifting is one of 40 short films being shown at VMDIFF, including international titles such as the 2020 Canne Palme D’Or winning I Am Afraid to Forget Your Face and highly anticipated Sundance 2021 selection Inabitável/Unlivable from Brazil. The Irish also programme includes award-winning actor and writer Eva Birthistle’s directorial debut Kathleen Was Here and Lia Campbell’s accomplished student debut To All My Darlings starring Demi Isaac Oviawe.

While this Mescal-return might only be for a precious 14 minutes (we’ll take what we can get), we’ll be seeing plenty more of him on screen this year: he’s set to star in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut The Lost Daughter (alongside Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson), and will also be performing in the musical, Carmen, as a soldier seduced by a fiery gypsy.
