Ikea x Hay x Tom Dixon

At Ikea’s Democratic Design Day, the Swedish retail giant announced not one, but two new collaborations. Firstly, they’ve teamed up with British designer Tom Dixon, renowned for pieces in the V&A, as well as home interiors in furniture, lighting and accessories. The second collaboration is with Danish designers and manufacturers?HAY, focusing on the living area of the home.

What’s spurred on these collaborations? Ikea, known for its affordable,?functional and high-quality products, has recognised rapidly shifting values in contemporary homes. Homes are shrinking,?and how people relate to their space is rapidly changing. HAY and Ikea have come together to create a new collection that embraces today’s?transient living. Word is, we should expect high quality classic Scandinavian products, made with unconventional materials and a range that will allow for?adaptable living.

The collaboration with Tom Dixon will also look at harnessing opportunities from contemporary challenges. However, it won’t be until August 2017 that we can expect to see these fresh takes on traditional furniture. Rolf Hay, co-founder of Hay, says they are looking at what can be achieved with “the possibilities?of tomorrow in modern production”. The revised shopper bag (below) is just the start.
