From concealed appliances to contemporary finishes, all the kitchen details that will be big in 2020.
We’ve said goodbye to one year and stepped into another, and there will always be predictions about what a fresh decade will bring. Pantone announced that Classic Blue is the colour of 2020 (apparently because of our desire for calm and stability), other interiors experts have been forecasting what we’ll all be coveting for our kitchens.
When it comes to interiors, and especially with something as permanent as your kitchen, there’s no point buying into something merely because it’s fashionable. If you don’t truly love your cupboards, you’ll be stuck with them long after we’ve all forgotten about Classic Blue and moved onto the next hot colour. Nevertheless, if there’s something that appeals to you in these predictions, by all means, go for it. After all, we don’t think we’d ever get tired of having the luxury of a beautiful larder cupboard.
Concealed appliances
Although Derry Girls may have proclaimed that only “Protestants keep toasters in the cupboard”, in 2020 it seems we’re all going to be at it. The demand for cupboards to conceal everything from dedicated tea and coffee stations, to microwaves and toasters, and even designs like this hob that can be hidden away is on the rise, and isn’t showing any signs of going away.
After all, if you’ve carefully considered every detail of your kitchen design, chances are, your kettle doesn’t exactly fit into it seamlessly. Concealing appliances also leaves countertops free of clutter, creating a calm and streamlined finish.
Natural finishes
While new technology allows surfaces to be thinner and sleeker than ever, it seems we are craving a contrast to this shiny perfection. Ben Burbidge of Kitchen Makers explains that “2020 will see a resurgence of natural finishes, where wood components are left exposed; adding detail and definition to a space. Natural oak drawer boxes, granite worktops and soothing neutrals will be favoured options.”
Practical hardware
While polished chrome handles and finishes have been popular recently, experts are predicting a move away from these towards brushed finishes in brass, copper and bronze, which are much easier to maintain. We will also see an increase in rounded, softer handle designs to create a more inviting space.
Smart storage
Something that seems to be at the top of everyone’s list, larder cupboards are set to be extremely popular next year. Providing ample storage in easily accessed drawers and shelves, they’re an absolute dream for anyone who loves a well-organised space. From vegetables to dry goods and spices, a larder cupboard can store so many of our everyday ingredients, while making them easy to find.
