As today is the second anniversary of their marriage, we take a look at five standout memories from Meghan and Harry’s wedding day
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry celebrate their second wedding anniversary today.
In two years, their lives have changed considerably and not in the way we presume they had planned.
The couple is now residing in Los Angeles with their son Archie following their decision to step back as senior members of the royal family. Increased media scrutiny surrounding the Sussexes led them to choose a more independent life. Earlier this year in a speech at a private dinner for the Sentebale charity Harry said: “There was no other option.”
I vividly remember the very day Meghan and Harry wed. Of all the memories that stand out, the most striking was watching Meghan walk up the steps to the church while I stood in the middle of a pharmacy in North Kerry. Whether you care about the royals are not, you can’t deny the public interest. It’s a preoccupation that passes through borders and stands watching in shops, bars, and restaurants across the world.
In the midst of the chit chat, while I waited at the counter, the overarching feeling was one of change. Meghan was a modern delight for the crown and would surely transform the establishment. This she did, but not in the way everyone envisioned.
Circumstances may change but some things will always stay the same. The media audit of the royals is a frenzied enterprise that started with Princess Diana and never really stopped.
And though Meghan and Harry may no longer be official royals, it doesn’t mean we can’t look back on their wedding. Some love it and some hate it, but it’s a spectacle of the highest order.
The dress
On the day, Meghan kept it simple and understated in a Givenchy dress designed by Clare Waight Keller. The silk dress had three-quarter length sleeves and an open boat neckline. The 5-metre veil was embroidered with flowers representing the countries of the Commonwealth, the California poppy, in honour of Meghan Markle’s home state of California, and wintersweet, a flower that grows at Kensington Palace. Like all royal wedding dresses, the look is iconic.
The afters dress
Meghan’s reception dress almost eclipsed her actual wedding dress, with many favouring the Stella McCartney halterneck gown. It was a clean design, keeping with the tone of the day but it had a touch of A-list glam.
Prince Charles
One of the most talked-about aspects of the wedding was Prince Charles walking Meghan down the aisle. Meghan’s own father did not attend, and so, she walked herself to a halfway point where she then met Charles for the rest of the journey.
The guests
The guest list was a star-studded affair. Politicians, royals from other countries, and Hollywood celebrities congregated together at St George’s Chapel. David and Victoria Beckham, Amal Clooney, and her husband George, Sir Elton John, Priyanka Chopra, Oprah and Serena Williams are just some of the high-profile individuals who attended. This high-calibre meant the style stakes were high and we were treated to some fantastic fashion.
Prince Charlotte and Prince George
The future King of England and his sister Princess Charlotte almost stole the show on the day of the wedding. From the facial expressions to the outfits, they were a highlight of the day.
