Orla Kiely On Her Biggest Inspirations And Favourite Spaces

At the fore-front of the mid-century design revival, Orla Kiely tells us about the piece she wish she had designed, plus her favourite spaces, both home and abroad.

I LOVE LIVING IN SOUTH LONDON because it can feel like living in a village or a very big city, depending on your mood. There is so much great theatre, wonderful exhibitions and delicious food – always something new to discover.

MY IDEAL DAY would be spent with my family, going for a walk along the beach from Killiney to Bray. I miss being close to the sea, so I make the most of it when I can.

THE THING I WISH I HAD DESIGNED MYSELF is Robin Day’s classic Side Chair. It embodies all the things good design should: beauty, function and versatility.

MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT IS Bob Bob Ricard in London. It’s fun, with great atmosphere and food. For something more casual, Honey & Co is always good for dinner with friends. Their aubergine dish is my favourite.

MY FAVOURITE DESTINATION IS difficult to choose. I loved a recent trip to Porto, but Iceland is so special, with nowhere else quite like it – an otherworldly experience.
