Sabrina is back: watch the eerie trailer for the new teenage witch

Netflix has released its official trailer for The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina; its modern remake of the nineties classic Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Unlike the original, which was lighthearted and funny, the Netflix version is spooky and strange.

Sabrina is played by Mad Men star, Kiernan Shipka, who must choose between the mortal world and the ‘other realm’ on her 16th birthday. Frightening scenes of a cemetery at night show Sabrina’s white dress fade to black. An eerie male figure dressed in a cloak marks her forehead with blood, asking, “Are you willing to forsake the path of light and take the path of night?”

Other cloaked figures chant in the background, more blood drips, and a terrified Sabrina tries to escape the madness. The trailer is made all the more creepy by the upbeat music playing overhead. This contrast between good and bad is evident from start to finish.

A statement issued by Netflix said the show, “imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft.

“Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature – half-witch, half-mortal – while standing against the evil forces that threaten her.”

While hugely different from the Melissa Joan Hart version of Sabrina, some elements of the show remain the same. Our old, favourite characters make a return; including Aunt Hilda, Aunt Zelda and Harvey Kinkle, though they’re played by a new cast. Even Salem the cat makes a brief appearance in the clip.

Made by the producers of Riverdale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on 26th October 2018, just in time for Halloween. Watch the trailer below:
