Here’s everything we know about the newest Scream film
The newest sequel of the iconic horror series Scream is coming to the big screen next year.
After a nine year hiatus from the release of Scream 4, the fifth film will feature a few original characters from its first 1996 film.
Courtney Cox recently announced her return as news reporter Gale Weathers in a chilling Instagram post.
“We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney,” said filmmakers Radio Silence.
“We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”
Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the co-directors of 2019’s Ready or Not, are said to be directing the film, as the legendary Wes Craven, who directed the first four films, passed away in 2015.
The cast
According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Arquette is also returning as Dewey Riley, the Woodboro Sheriff who has taken more than a few beatings during the film series.
“I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new,” Arquette said.
“Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honouring Wes Craven’s legacy.”
Neve Campbell may also be reprising her role as Sidney Prescott and hinted at current “negotiations” with the directors and the series’ creator Kevin Williamson.
“The two directors wrote me a very touching letter about Wes Craven,” the actress told Rotten Tomatoes, “and how he was such an inspiration to them and how they really want to honour him, and that meant a great, great deal to me.”
“So we’ll see. Hopefully we can all see eye to eye on the project and find a way to make it. I’m so grateful for these films… I love Sidney Prescott.
“It’s always fun for me to step back in her shoes, and it’s always fun for me to see the cast come back and make one of these films again and try to make another good one.”
The story
The new Spyglass Media Group-Paramount Production film will be based on a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Castle Rock).
The Scream franchise has been a global success and it seems that, with a star-studded cast, passionate directors and talented writers, it has every chance of being just as brilliant as its predecessors.
The movie is said to begin filming later this year after Covid-19 restrictions lift, which could give it a Halloween 2021 release date.
