bruce jenner interview with diane sawyer
As perhaps the most hotly anticipated celebrity interview of the last few years, this weekend, the world (well, the Keeping Up With The Kardashian fans) were glued to Bruce Jenner‘s interview with Diane Sawyer. By all accounts, it was rather triumphant, and not the tacky, sensationalist crap we might have initially expected. Bruce was honest, giving and painted a pretty clear picture of what it’s been like to go through a transition under the scrutinising glare of the media. Whether he meant to or not, former Olympian Bruce has become quite the spokesperson for transgender rights, and no doubt, will have amassed a huge, new following on account of this interview.
Back in the 70s, Jenner was adhering to every stereotypical tenet of masculinity, but it was never who he was. Over the years, it became more and more difficult for Bruce to deny his true identity, however as the main man of the Kardashian/Jenner house, deciding to start identifying as a woman wasn’t as easy as ABC. Over the years on the reality TV show, Bruce largely slipped into the background, letting his wife Kris and larger than life daughters take centre stage. During his two hour interview with broadcasting veteran Sawyer, however, it seems Bruce came back to life.
“It’s gonna be tough… I’ve been thinking about this day forever. What I should do with my life? How do I tell my story?”
“One thing that’s so important in this whole process is, we have to keep our sense of humor about this, okay?” Jenner told Sawyer at the outset. “It’s honestly, it’s really pretty funny, me of all people, Bruce Jenner, has to deal with this issue, running away from all of this stuff.”
“I want to know how this story ends…??I would like to think that we could save some lives here.”
And just like that, a transgender hero was born.
