Emma Thompson Says Hollywood Sexism Is Getting Worse

Emma Thompson says sexism in Hollywood is getting worse. So maybe put that chilled champagne we had busted out at the news of Jennifer Lawrence’s rising pay cheque and Rose Bryne’s female focused production back in the fridge.

In an interview with Radio Times, the Oscar-winning screenwriter is to the negative point when describing the anti-woman climate that exists in the film industry today. Thompson even asserted that Hollywood had gotten more sexist than when she first started. She said that when she was younger ?I really did think we were on our way to a better world and when I look at it now, it is in a worse state than I have known it, particularly for women and I find that very disturbing and sad.?

“I think it’s still completely s*** actually,” she said. “I don’t think there’s any appreciable improvement and I think that for women, the question of how they are supposed to look is worse than it was even when I was young.” This incessant focus on how a woman looks is something Jennifer Lawrence spoke about at Comic-Con, when she relayed how body shaming was tougher for actresses starting out than for established women like her.

Emma Thompson elaborates in the interview, referencing her conversations with other female actresses. “I get behind as many young female performers as I can and actually a lot of the conversations I have with them are about exactly the fact that we are facing and writing about the same things and nothing has changed,” she said. The Nanny McPhee actress also said that ageism is still ongoing. In her latest movie, The Legend of Barney Thompson, the character the 56-year-old is playing is 77. ?It would be really nice to get someone who is actually 77 to play her,? Thompson admitted before adding that she did want to play the role.

While we have to applaud Thompson’s angry honesty, we wonder if anyone at the top tiers is actually listening.
